RF Equalizers: Compensating Gain Slope

2026-07-21 · Engineering Team

What an equalizer does

An RF equalizer shapes gain or loss versus frequency. It compensates for amplitude slope introduced by cables, amplifiers, and other components. When you only need flat, frequency-independent loss, a plain attenuator is the simpler choice.

Why slope matters

  • Long cable runs attenuate high frequencies more than low.
  • Amplifiers and mixers often roll off at band edges.
  • Uncorrected slope reduces dynamic range and signal quality.

Types

  • Gain-slope equalizers — flatten a system response.
  • Tilt or linear equalizers — correct a monotonic slope.
  • Custom equalizers — matched to a specific frequency profile.

Key specs

  • Slope or attenuation profile versus frequency.
  • Insertion loss and return loss.
  • Frequency range and power handling.
